Bangor is a suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It lies 28 kilometers south of Sydney`s central business district, in the Sutherland Shire local government area of Menai. Bangor is situated on the Woronora River, south of the Georges River.
History of Bangor
Bangor was named after the birthplace of the land`s owner and farmer, Owen Jones, who was born in Bangor, Wales. The Postmaster General`s Office changed the suburb`s name to Menai in 1910 to avoid confusion with the Tasmanian town of Bangor. The eastern section of Menai was renamed Bangor in 1976 when it expanded.
