Caringbah is a suburb in Sydney's southern suburbs, in the Australian state of New South Wales. It is based in the Sutherland Shire local government area, 24 kilometers (15 miles) south of Sydney's central business district.
Caringbah used to extend from the Georges River's Woolooware Bay to the Port Hacking estuary's Yowie Bay and Burraneer Bay. Several Caringbah districts have been designated as different suburbs, yet they all share the same postcode of 2229.
Caringbah was previously known as Highfield, but it's unclear if this was a position description or if it was named after one of the first residents. After steam trams began running between Cronulla and Sutherland in 1911, the name Caringbah was used. It's an Aboriginal word for a pademelon wallaby from the Kumbainggar language.
Between Laguna St and the water is Kareena Park, a forested area. The E.G Waterhouse National Camelia Gardens is the area's crown treasure, a dense botanic gardens-style collection of plants and flowers with peaceful walks winding through them and streams running down the hill to the duck pond - where there were swarms of ducks.
Breen Park, nestled between Willarong Rd and Glen McGrath Oval, is a hidden gem. It has lovely, mature gum and pine trees.
Caringbah has a Park Lane Playground as well. Parking, play equipment, and a restroom are all available.
Caringbah has three secondary schools and a number of primary schools.
Caringbah Selective High School is the Sutherland Shire's only academically selective secondary school. Endeavour Sports High School is one of seven selected sports secondary schools in NSW that offer outstanding athletes Targeted Sports Programs. De La Salle College is a secondary school for boys in grades 7 through 10. Caringbah Public School (Caringbah South) and Caringbah North Public School (Caringbah North) both have an opportunity class for students in years 5 and 6.
There’s also the Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Primary School and Laguna Street Public School.
Sutherland Shire Cricket Club and Lilli Pilli Soccer Club both play at Glen McGrath Oval which was previously known as Caringbah Oval.
