History of Como
Woronora was the previous name for Como. The postal town of Woronora was renamed to Como in 1922, after the request of Mr. James Frederick Murphy, manager of the Holt-Sutherland Co. and the affairs of Thomas Holt (1811–1888). Mr. Murphy named the suburb from Lake Como at the foot of the Lepontine Alps and the Lugano Prealps of Italy, due to its similarities.
Many of the current street names reflect the Italian influence on the area, including Genoa Street, Verona Range, Tivoli Esplanade, Ortona Parade, Novara Crescent, Pavia Road, Cremona Road, and Loretta Avenue, which are all named after cities in Italy.
