Illawong is a suburb of Sydney, Australia, situated in the state of New South Wales. It is approximately 27 kilometers south of Sydney`s Central Business District, in the Sutherland Shire`s local government area, in the Menai area. The postcode 2234 is shared by the surrounding suburbs Menai, Bangor Barden Ridge, and Alfords Point.
Illawong is nestled between the Georges River`s southern and Woronora River`s northern shores.
Illawong refers to the Georges and Woronora Rivers and is an Aboriginal name that means "between two waters." It was once home to the Tharawal and/or Eora tribes, who left behind several middens, rock sculptures, and cave paintings as evidence of their existence.
The Menai region was suburbanized in the 1970s, and Illawong was chosen for its ancient nautical street names.
Some of the nicest natural riverine habitats can be found in Georges River National Park. Walking routes and spacious riverside picnic places on the Georges River`s northern sides are popular. Walk around the calm Yeramba Lagoon, which is home to over 100 bird species, and the Ridge Track, which provides great river views.
The Moons, as Greater and Little Moon Bay are known locally, are located on the Georges River, facing Lugarno on the opposite bank, and are backed by a strip of mangrove-lined natural forest through which a walking trail runs. On high tide, it`s a great place to catch bream and flathead. The Crag, a cliff face utilized by rock climbers, is located within the bushland reserve.
Illawong Primary School, Tharawal Primary School, and Menai High School, the main public secondary co-educational high school serving the Menai Area, are the available schools in Illawong.
The 1st Wearne Bay Sea Scouts is the scout organization in Illawong. They are represented by all five young divisions (Joeys, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, and Rovers). The organization meets at Wearne Bay, on the Georges River, in the scout hall.
