Kareela is a suburb in the Australian state of New South Wales, located in southern Sydney. It`s a peaceful residential area situated alongside the Georges River.
Kareela is bordered by Georges River on the north, Sylvania on the east, Kirrawee on the south, and Jannali and Oyster Bay on the west.
History of Kareela
Kareela is an Aboriginal name that means "place of trees and water," as well as "south wind" or "wind rider." The Geographical Names Board authorized the suburb`s name in 1968.
Kareela was Stockland`s first mixed-use development, built in 1953. The estate was previously known as Sylvan Headland. After the estate opened, Sylvan Headland was renamed as Kareela.
The majority of the streets in Kareela are named after outright and line-honours winners of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race between 1945 and 1970.
