Kirrawee is a suburb in the Sutherland Shire of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, approximately 25 kilometers south of the Sydney central business district. Kirrawee is found between Sutherland and Gymea in the west and Gymea and Grays Point in the east. The Royal National Park forms its southern border, while Kareela and Jannali form its northern border.
According to the Sutherland Shire Council website there are two possible origins for the word "Kirrawee." The first option is that it is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning 'lengthy,' while the second is that it is derived from a Dharawal word, "gi(a)rrawee(i)" (alternative spelling "garrawi"), which means 'place of white cockatoos' or 'sulphur-crested cockatoos.' The acknowledged meaning for the suburb name is 'place of white cockatoos,' according to the existing signs built by the Council. With the opening of the Sutherland-Cronulla railway line in 1939, the name was adopted.
In Waratah Street, Kirrawee, there is an indoor climbing center. Helena Street has an off-leash dog park. Playgrounds can be found at Bowie Park, Betham Place Reserve, Nyrang Place Reserve, Flora Street Reserve, and Tea Tree Street Reserve.
Kirrawee's South Village is providing new stores and restaurants to the area. A large grass oval with a circling footpath/bike track and a fully-fenced playground to the side make up the outside space. Shade, seats, and play equipment are all available at the playground.
Kirrawee's educational institutions include Kirrawee High School, a comprehensive co-educational secondary school, and Kirrawee Public School, as well as a variety of pre-schools and childcare centers. Gymea Technology High School is also located on the outskirts of Kirrawee.
Club Kirrawee, a lawn bowls club, is located on Oak Road. The Kirrawee Oval, located nearby, is a floodlit athletic complex. The St. Patrick's Sutherland Football Club plays at Kirrawee Oval.
