Kogarah is a suburb of Sydney, Australia, in the state of New South Wales. It lies 14 kilometers (9 miles) south of Sydney`s central business district and is considered the St George area`s center.
The town of Kogarah is well-known for its numerous schools and health-care facilities (including two hospitals and many medical centres).
The name Kogarah comes from Kogarah Bay, a small bay on the Georges River`s northern coast, and is derived from an Aboriginal word that means rushes or place of reeds. It had previously been spelled `Coggera,` `Cogerah,` and `Kuggerah,` but when the railway line arrived through the area in the 1880s, the current spelling was settled.
Kogarah used to reach all the way to the coast, but it was separated into the suburbs of Kogarah Bay and Beverley Park in the 1960s.
There are numerous parks and reserves in the Kogarah area, as well as plenty of sports grounds. Hogben Park, Frys Reserve, Scarborough Park, Kogarah Park, and Jubilee Oval are just a few of them.
On weekends, the Carss Bush Park is bustling with local families having barbecues, but during the week, it is quiet. There`s plenty of room for a picnic, a swim at the beach, a dog walk, a bike ride, or letting the kids run around in the play areas.
A number of schools are available in Kogarah. Kogarah Public School, Kogarah High School, James Cook Boys Technology High School, Moorefield Girls High School, St Declan`s Catholic Primary School, St George Girls High School, St Patrick`s Primary School (co-ed), Marist College Kogarah, which is a secondary school for boys, and Sydney Institute of TAFE: St. George Campus are among these schools.
The St. George Illawarra Dragons are a professional rugby league football club based in Australia. The team has offices and league clubs in both Wollongong and Kogarah, and trains and plays games at Jubilee Oval in Kogarah on a regular basis.
