Loftus, in the Sutherland Shire local government area, is located 29 kilometers south of Sydney`s central business district.
Loftus is a bushland-style residential neighbourhood near to the Royal National Park, which runs along Sydney`s south-eastern border. Loftus and Fahy Creeks comprise the western boundary.
Lord Augustus William Frederick Spencer Loftus, a governor of New South Wales from 1878 to 1885, was the inspiration for Loftus. Ten years later, the name was changed to Loftus, and the station was relocated to its current location in 1979.
In 1885, the Illawarra railway line from Sydney to Sutherland was completed. Loftus Junction, which opened on March 9, 1886, was the next station south. During World War II, the national park was used as a training ground, and this site was used as an army camp site.
