Lucas Heights is a suburb in the Australian state of New South Wales. It is close to the Royal National Park.
Lucas Heights is located in the Sutherland Shire, 31 kilometers south-west of Sydney`s central business district. It is situated on the Woronora River, which runs north into the Georges River.
The name Lucas Heights originated from John Lucas Senior, a flour miller, who was granted 150 acres (0.6 km2) on the `head of unnamed stream into Georges River` in 1823. He built a water-powered mill to grind corn from the fields of the Illawarra region. Small ships sailed up the coast, into Botany Bay, the Georges River, and the Woronora River.
In 1996, the residential neighborhood that had previously been part of Lucas Heights was renamed Barden Ridge in order to boost the region`s real estate value by removing the HIFAR nuclear reactor`s association.
Ferntree Reserve is a park with boundaries enclosed along Ferntree Road and Edgecliff Place, however there are unfenced openings in the fence. With a picnic with family and friends, this place is ideal. Playing sport activities and running are suitable for children in this reserve.
A new 1.2-kilometer shared path connects Australia`s Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) to the neighboring community of Barden Ridge and continues to the Sutherland Shire Cycling Network, providing a safe off-road option for getting to work or enjoying a lunchtime bike ride.
A coeducational integrated school, Lucas Heights Community School serves students from Kindergarten through 12th grade.
The Ridge Pump Track, located across the road from ANSTO, is Australia`s second-largest bicycle pump track, with 954 square meters of bends, dips, and transitions to challenge riders of all skill levels and ages. It`s a completely fenced facility with fresh new accessible restrooms, 49 designated parking places, and landscaping that solidifies its place inside The Ridge Sports Complex.
