About Menai
Menai is a suburb in southern Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, approximately 29 kilometers south of the Sydney central business district in the Sutherland Shire local government area.
History of Menai
The suburb name was derived from Menai Bridge in Wales, which is located on the Menai Strait.
The area that is today known as Menai was named Bangor in 1895 by the land`s owner, a farmer named Owen Jones, after his birthplace in Wales, Bangor. To avoid confusion with the Tasmanian town of Bangor, the Postmaster General`s Office renamed the suburb Menai in 1910. When Menai grew, the eastern half was renamed Bangor.
