About Miranda
Miranda is a suburb in Sydney`s southern suburbs, in the Australian state of New South Wales. The suburb is known as a business hub for the suburbs to the south. Miranda is located in the Sutherland Shire, about 24 kilometers south of Sydney`s central business district.
History of Miranda
Miranda, a character in William Shakespeare`s play The Tempest, was named to the suburb by James Murphy, the Holt estate`s manager. James Murphy wrote in a 1921 letter, "the name Miranda was given to the locality by me as manager of the Holt Sutherland Company which I formed in 1881. I thought it a soft, euphonious, musical and appropriate name for a beautiful place." Miranda de Ebro, a town in Spain, is said to be the inspiration for the play`s character.
The land was sold to Holt in the 1860s, who intended to build a sheep and cow farm. Steam trams operated between Cronulla and Sutherland via Miranda by the 1920s.
