There are two theories on the origin of the name Sutherland.
The name was presumably derived from able seaman Forby Sutherland, who died on Captain Cook`s Endeavour voyage. Although Sutherland Point in Kurnell is named after him, there is no clear link between him and the Sutherland Shire. Second, the first parish south of the Georges River was called "Parish of Southerland" by Thomas Mitchell, surveyor general in 1835. (South with an "o"). However, it was spelled Sutherland in a later government gazette, which made the name meaningless.
Every tourist can visit Sutherland Park, Waratah Park, Peace Park, Forby Sutherland Memorial Garden, Sutherland Community Gardens, Clio Street Reserve, Glencoe Street Reserve, Gray Street Reserve, and Leonay Street Reserve which are all excellent places to relax, picnic, and walk.
Between the Woronora River and Sutherland sits Prince Edward Park, a huge park. The park contains natural Eucalyptus bushland with some walking pathways as you approach Sutherland.
