About Sylvania Waters
Sylvania Waters, also known as the "Jewel in the Crown of the Sutherland Shire" (affectionately known as "God`s Country" by its residents), is a suburb in southern Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The suburb is located 21 kilometers (13 miles) south of Sydney`s central business district in the Sutherland Shire local government area.
History of Sylvania Waters
The estate that spanned from Sutherland to Cronulla belonged to politician Thomas Holt (1811–1888). LJ Hooker developed Sylvania Waters Estate in the 1960s, reclaiming much of the land from the bay and effectively destroying the mangrove ecology to provide water frontages with boating facilities. The contract to develop the estate, build the houses, and advertise the new suburb was awarded to James Goyen.
To emphasize the development`s connection to water, streets were named after Australian rivers such as the Shoalhaven, Tweed, Murrumbidgee, Hawkesbury, and Barwon.
