About Sylvania
Sylvania is a suburb in the Sutherland Shire of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, located 22 kilometers south of the city center. It`s known for its seaside residences and eateries.
On the Princes Highway and Port Hacking Road, Sylvania is largely residential, however there are some native bushland sections and some business buildings.
History of Sylvania
The suburb`s name is derived from the old forested vegetation `sylvan` that implies wooded or inhabited the woods.
As a Crown gift, John Connell Laycock obtained this suburb. It was purchased a few years later by Thomas Holt, a notable landowner, financier, and politician, as part of the Holt-Sutherland Estate, which encompassed 13,000 acres (53 km2). In 1881, he founded the Sutherland Estate Company, which evolved into a community with a post office in 1883.
