Yowie Bay is a suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, located in the south of the city. Yowie Bay, in the Sutherland Shire local government area, is approximately 24 kilometers south of Sydney`s central business district.
Yowie Bay is named after a small bay on the Port Hacking estuary`s north coast (also known locally as the Port Hacking River).
The name Ewey Bay first appears on a map drawn by surveyor Robert Dixon in 1827. Dixon is thought to have recorded the Aboriginal name Ewey since he had labeled other sites surrounding Port Hacking with Aboriginal names. In 1889, the Village of Weerona was established on the land in the region. Around the same time, the spelling Yowie initially emerges.
Yowie Bay`s waterfronts are among the best in the shire, with magnificent views, beautiful parcels, and good facilities.
Yowie Bay Boat Ramp & Pontoon is a double boat ramp with a floating pontoon and gangway that enables safe access to the water at low and high tides. On-street parking for cars and trailers is provided. Toilets are provided in Kalang Lane Reserve, which is located off Wonga Road.
The suburb also has its own marina, boat ramp, and jetty for boaters. The Yowie Bay Friendly Grocer is one of the greatest general stores in the Shire, and the Postbox Café is a popular site to have a nice cup of coffee, breakfast, or lunch.
Yowie Bay Public School, a small school with a good reputation and a coastal location, is the only school in Yowie Bay. It is a co-educational elementary school that serves students in grades K through 6. In the surrounding suburbs can be found the other schools.
On the banks of Yowie Bay in Sydney`s south, the Port Hacking Open Sailing Club is a community-based family club.
